# What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making a subject — a brand, product, service, person or topic — appear inside the answer an AI assistant writes, rather than in a list of links. SEO competes for a position; AEO competes for being quoted. It works on two things at once: whether an engine can collect and read your material at all, and whether anything in it is specific enough to be worth quoting.

## Key points

- The unit of success is a citation inside a generated answer, not a rank. A page can rank first and never be quoted.
- Two conditions must both hold: the crawler that feeds the engine has to be allowed in, and the page has to return readable text. A JavaScript-only page fails the second condition even when robots.txt allows the first.
- Answer-first structure is what makes lifting easy: state the answer in the first paragraph, then support it with numbered points and question-shaped headings.
- Citations are not stable between runs. Measuring them once, and once only, measures the run rather than the subject — repeated checks are what turn a number into a reading.
- Attribution needs a declared set of your own pages. A cited page counts as yours only if its address is one you registered, which is why the anchor is a list and not a single link.

## Frequently asked questions

**Q: How is AEO different from SEO?**
A: SEO optimises for a position in a list of links, so it optimises for ranking signals. AEO optimises for being quoted inside a generated answer, so it optimises for collectability, structure and quotable facts — and it is measured as a citation rate rather than a rank.

**Q: What does an AEO platform actually measure?**
A: It asks the answer engines the questions a buyer would ask in a market, archives each raw answer with the sources the engine used, and reports how often the subject is cited. Anything less than the raw answer is a score you have to take on trust.

**Q: Can AEO guarantee a citation?**
A: No, and any tool that promises it is guessing. What can be established is whether a page is collectable and readable, whether the crawler feeding an engine is allowed in, and whether citations moved after a change — each of which is checkable.
